Firstly, congratulations on getting through to one of the most sought after private MBA colleges in India.
Having graduated from the college barely two months ago, I can assure you that you’re going to be a changed person once this roller-coaster of a journey is over. Whether the change will be for the good or for the worse will depend solely on how you utilize the plethora of opportunities that come your way.
Just like any of your favourite video games, the daunting MBA can also be conquered with the help of a few cheat codes:
- Don’t be a snob: Don’t ever look down upon any of your peers due to either their personal, academic or financial background (you know what I mean). The fact that both of you have meritoriously secured admission into the same college is reason enough for you to shrug off that damaging and repulsive ‘superiority complex’.
Trust me, a 30-minute heart-to-heart conversation with someone from a completely different background than yours will teach you more management principles than any of those acclaimed books ever could.
- Get out of that ‘comfort zone’: The biggest mistake you can make at IMT is to stay inside that ‘protective cocoon’ you’ve created for yourself.
This protective cocoon manifests itself in a variety of ways; from choosing friends only from your own community/city to restricting yourself to activities which you’ve deemed are ‘within your reach’.
Try a new sport, make new friends, do something you never thought you could, go on a trek, try your hand at public speaking and so on and so forth. That elusive ROI that everyone desires from an MBA degree can only be achieved if you’re willing to truly let go of all inhibitions and break out of this suffocating cocoon.
- Choose the right mentor: I couldn’t emphasize enough on the importance of choosing the right set of people to look up to or to take advice from whenever you’re confused or whenever life throws a question with multiple correct answers (trust me, there’ll be many).Surround yourself with people who’re better than you. As the saying rightly goes, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room!”.
- Don’t complain: Be it the committee you choose to get into or the summer internship you bag; you’ll always feel there’s someone who’s got a better ‘deal’. Don’t be one of those people who have a reason ready for all their predicaments.
Remember, ‘the grass might be greener on the other side but does it really matter if you’re willing to fly?’
Yes, a rhetoric on the Holy Grail of all B-Schools: ‘Placements’ will be out soon! 😀
